How to Choose the Right Ocean Adventure (Without Booking the Wrong Trip)
If you've ever looked at a stunning photo of crystal-clear water and thought "I'd love to do that... but I don't know where I'd even start," you're not alone.
One of the biggest misconceptions in ocean travel is that every trip is built for experienced divers. The reality is that there are incredible adventures for complete beginners, confident snorkellers, newly certified divers and people with hundreds of dives under their belt.
The key is choosing the right trip for where you are now, not where you think you should be.
There isn't one "best" ocean adventure
After more than 20 years helping people plan ocean holidays, I've learnt that choosing the right destination has very little to do with finding the world's most famous reef.
It's about matching the experience to the traveller.
Some people want to spend a week floating over colourful coral with nothing more than a mask and snorkel. Others dream of photographing tiny nudibranchs in Indonesia. Some are looking for luxury with a side of diving, while others are happiest living aboard a boat for ten days chasing whale sharks and manta rays.
None of those holidays are better than another.
They're simply built for different people.
If you love the ocean but don't dive
You absolutely don't need to be a diver to experience some of the most incredible marine environments on the planet.
Some of our favourite snorkelling destinations include places where the reef sits just metres below the surface, making marine life easily accessible without scuba equipment.
These trips are ideal if you:
aren't dive certified
are travelling with a partner who dives
simply prefer snorkelling
are looking for a relaxed tropical escape.
In many destinations you can spend your days swimming with turtles, reef sharks, rays and vibrant coral gardens without ever putting a scuba tank on your back.
If you've always wanted to learn to dive
Learning to dive doesn't have to mean joining a crowded resort course during your annual beach holiday.
Choosing the right destination can make all the difference.
We often recommend locations with calm conditions, experienced instructors and beautiful reefs so that your first underwater experience feels exciting rather than overwhelming.
Many travellers discover that once they remove the pressure of "having to be good at it", diving becomes one of the most rewarding things they've ever done.

If you're already a certified diver
Once you've completed your certification, the world opens up.
This is where your interests start shaping the perfect trip.
Ask yourself:
Do you love colourful coral reefs?
Are you fascinated by sharks or large pelagic species?
Do tiny marine creatures make you reach for your camera?
Would you rather dive from a luxury resort or spend every day exploring from a liveaboard?
Your answers are far more important than your logbook.
Someone with 40 dives who loves macro photography may be perfectly suited to Lembeh Strait, while another diver with the same experience would be far happier drifting alongside manta rays in Raja Ampat.
When experience really does matter
There are some trips where experience isn't just recommended. It's essential.
Strong currents, deeper dive profiles and remote locations often require confident buoyancy, good air consumption and the ability to look after yourself underwater.
That's not about excluding newer divers.
It's about making sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.
One of the hardest conversations I occasionally have is telling someone they're not quite ready for a particular trip yet. But I'd much rather help them build towards that goal than have them spend thousands of dollars on a holiday they won't enjoy.
Travelling solo? Consider a hosted group
"I'd love to do something like that... I just don't have anyone to go with."
Ocean travel doesn't have to mean travelling alone.
Hosted group trips, particularly women-only departures, are a fantastic way to meet like-minded people who already share your passion for the ocean.
Many lifelong friendships begin on dive boats.
The shared excitement of spotting a whale shark, helping each other gear up or laughing about the fish that stole someone's snack creates connections remarkably quickly.
My biggest piece of advice
One of my favourite memories wasn't on an advanced expedition. It was watching someone complete their very first ocean dive after months of telling me they were nervous.
They surfaced absolutely glowing.
Not because they'd seen something rare, but because they'd just discovered an entirely new world they never thought they'd be part of.
Moments like that are a good reminder that the "best" ocean adventure isn't measured by how remote the destination is or how many dives you've logged.
The right trip is the one that's right for you
Whether you're dreaming about your first snorkelling holiday, thinking about learning to dive, or planning your next big expedition, there is an ocean adventure that fits your experience, confidence and travel style.
Finding that match is often the difference between a good holiday and one you'll still be talking about years later.
