The Destination That Surprised Me the Most

Sri Lanka: The place that stole my heart.

I have planned a lot of trips. And I mean a lot. But Sri Lanka is the one that genuinely caught me off guard, and I mean that in the best possible way.

I went the first time to source operators for a client. I had seen the photos online and thought I had a rough idea of what to expect. I really did not. Here is what actually happened.

The First Thing That Hit Me Was the Smell

I know, weird place to start. But I promise it makes sense.

I half expected that heavy, polluted city air you sometimes get stepping off a plane in Asia. Instead I got spices, flowers, earth and salt air. It was fresh and warm and completely unexpected. It sounds like a small thing but it immediately told me this place was going to be different.

Sigiriya Stopped Me in My Tracks

I was not prepared for Sigiriya. Full stop.

This ancient rock fortress rises straight out of the jungle and no photo I had seen came close to the real thing. The history, the scale, the nature all around it. It is genuinely jaw dropping.

And then there are the elephants. Not in an enclosure, not performing. Just living their lives in their own environment. I will be honest, I did not expect to find that as moving as I did. It is one of those things you just have to see for yourself.

I also properly discovered ayurveda here for the first time, which became a bit of a theme for the rest of my Sri Lanka visits.

The Wildlife Is Seriously Underrated

Yala and Udawalawe national parks are extraordinary. Leopards, elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, more bird species than you can count. But honestly my favourite wildlife experience in Sri Lanka was Minneriya.

Minneriya is all about elephants and it does not have the crowds that some of the bigger parks attract. It is quiet, it is peaceful, and the elephant sightings are incredible. If you only do one national park in Sri Lanka, I would point you here first.

I also spent time near Batticaloa feeding deer in a local park and getting completely sidetracked in a sari shop for the better part of an hour. Those unplanned bits are often the highlight.

I Drove a Tuk Tuk From the Beach to the Jungle and I Highly Recommend It

Yes really. I started in Weligama along the coast through Dondra Point (the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka) all the way to Udawalawe and Tissamaharama.

It was chaotic and brilliant. The coastal road is beautiful, the villages you pass through are relaxed and friendly, and Dondra Point is one of those spots where you stop, look out at the ocean and think "yep, that's worth it." Do it if you get the chance.

Pigeon Island Is the Real Deal for Divers and Snorkellers

Nilaveli and Trincomalee on the northeast coast are where things got seriously good for me as an ocean person.

Pigeon Island Marine National Park has some of the best snorkelling and diving I have done anywhere. Healthy coral, great fish life, excellent visibility. It is so good it made my list of the Top 10 Hidden Dive and Snorkel Spots Around the World (grab the free guide at the end of this post).

The northeast coast is far less visited than the south which means the underwater world here is still in really good shape. Divers and snorkellers, put this one on the list.

The Food. Honestly Just Incredible.

I love food and Sri Lanka absolutely delivered. The flavours are bold and built on spices that have been part of the culture here for centuries. Cinnamon, turmeric, tamarind, curry leaf, coconut. And everything is so fresh. The seafood on the south coast especially. Every meal felt like a highlight.

Sri Lankan food is genuinely underrated on the world stage and I do not think that will last much longer.

Ayurvie Weligama Is the One I Keep Going Back To

I have been to Weligama several times now and Ayurvie Resort is a big reason why.

This is a proper beachside ayurveda retreat, not a day spa that uses the word loosely. The treatments are the real deal, the team genuinely care, and the combination of ocean air and proper rest is hard to beat. It is my go-to recommendation for anyone who wants to add a real wellness element to their Sri Lanka trip.

The People Are What Made It

Sri Lanka has been through a lot. A civil war that went on for nearly thirty years. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. Real, collective hardship.

And yet the warmth and positivity of the people there genuinely surprised me. Not in a performative tourist-friendly way, just genuinely warm, proud and generous. I had conversations with locals that I still think about. It added a layer to the trip that I was not expecting and it is honestly one of the main reasons I keep recommending it to passengers.

The History Adds So Much to the Experience

From Sigiriya to Galle Fort to the fabric markets in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka's history is rich and layered and it is everywhere you look. Galle alone is worth a full day. The fort walls, the colonial buildings, the ocean right there. It is one of those places that feels both really old and completely alive at the same time.

So Who Is Sri Lanka For?

Genuinely, a lot of people.

Divers and snorkellers will love Pigeon Island and the northeast coast. Wildlife lovers will not know where to look in Minneriya and Udawalawe. Culture and history buffs will be in their element. Anyone wanting a proper reset should head straight to Ayurvie Weligama. And if you want adventure, hire a tuk tuk and try a tuk tuk challenge.

Sri Lanka works for a lot of different travel styles and that is exactly what makes it such a great destination to plan for all passengers.
